Chasing birds in the Catlins

Updated: Aug 22, 2021

July 2021

While the weather forecast was a bit dire a few days of sunshine meant I could grab my camera and head out for some bird photography.

The elusive Riroriro

The Riroriro (Grey Warbler) is an elusive little bird - although it's prolific throughout NZ they are tiny and move fast. They are pretty tough on spiders - feeding on them and using strands from spider webs to hold their nests together. Tradition says that the Riroriro will build its nest in the opposite direction to prevailing wind. Kind of makes them early town planners.

A clique, concentration, crown, rattle, realm of Kingfishers

Normally kingfishers are difficult to photograph - they are extremely wary of humans and don't tend to hang around waiting to be photographed. It was a different story on this trip, when I wasn't quite sure where to point the lens!
